Small pelagic fish fitness relates to local environmental conditions and trophic variables

چکیده

Small pelagic fish (SPF) are key organisms for the functioning of marine ecosystems. In recent decades, these species have undergone significant changes in biomass, growth and body condition Mediterranean Sea. Seasonal spatial information about biological ecological traits SPF their relationship with environmental variables is still missing. Here, we investigated along a latitudinal gradient Northwestern Sea seasonal patterns fitness (in terms condition, fat content reproduction activity) two important SPF, European anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) sardine (Sardina pilchardus). We used non-parametric multivariate analyses Generalized Additive Models (GAMs) to investigate which trophic could explain observed variations during 2018–2019. Mean values, relative index (Kn) gonadosomatic (GSI) were calculated monthly. also measured individual’s stable isotope composition muscle. Chlorophyll-a, sea surface temperature salinity as descriptors. The results revealed temporal both indices, well isotopic values. GAMs showed that variability was mostly explained by variables, addition factors. Trophic contributed case anchovy. This study provides insights into interplay commercial gradient, contributes understand fluctuations population declining trends inform proactive fisheries management at local regional scale.

Essential fish habitats (EFH) of small pelagic fishes in the north of the Persian Gulf and Oman Sea, Iran

Small pelagic fishes particularly anchovy (Encrasicholina punctifer) and sardine (Sardinella sindensis) have an important role to support the Iranian fisheries and are distributed along the coastal waters of the Persian Gulf and Oman Sea. Using a logbook on small pelagic fisheries, a GIS-based environmental modeling approach was applied to investigate the presence and abundance of anchovy and s...

Small pelagic fishes particularly anchovy (Encrasicholina punctifer) and sardine (Sardinella sindensis) have an important role to support the Iranian fisheries, and are distributed along the entire length of the Persian Gulf and Oman Sea coastal waters. Using small pelagic fisheries logbook, a GIS-based environmental modelling approach was applied to investigate the presence and abundance of an...

Modelling Stream-Fish Functional Traits in Reference Conditions: Regional and Local Environmental Correlates

Identifying the environmental gradients that control the functional structure of biological assemblages in reference conditions is fundamental to help river management and predict the consequences of anthropogenic stressors. Fish metrics (density of ecological guilds, and species richness) from 117 least disturbed stream reaches in several western Iberia river basins were modelled with generali...

Environmental variables and plankton communities in the pelagic of lakes: enclosure experiment and comparative lake survey

Most phytoplankton production occurs in the turbulently mixed surface layer of lakes and oceans. Environmental factors such as mixed layer depth and background turbidity substantially influence the availability of essential, production-limiting resources, i.e., light and nutrients. We tested the predictions of a dynamic model concerning the effects of water column mixing depth and background tu...
